Winston,
a miniature long-haired dachshund, wants to impress his friends on his first
day at the beach, but when you are a small dog in a big new place, sometimes it
is an effort just keeping up. . .
Winston’s World: The Beach is a children’s storybook with photographs by
Debby Heard and words by Sue Allison. The story about the exploits of three
dogs at a beach is simple and poignant. The book is beautifully presented with
sepia photographs on dark brown paper. It is aimed at children aged 2 to 9
years, but has wider appeal among teenagers, adults and dog-lovers at large.
Winston's World was filmed at
Debby Heard is a professional photographer specialising in photographs of children and animals. She lives in Ohoka with her husband, two daughters and their dogs. Sue Allison is a journalist. She lives in Ohoka with her husband, four children and 137 animals (at last count). Debby and Sue first met at the University of Canterbury Post-Graduate School of Journalism. Finding themselves near-neighbours in Ohoka some 20 years later, with a mutual love of animals, children and literature, they decided to combine forces to produce books with a difference and set up their own publishing company, Ironing Board Press.
